Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Maine's recent mysterious lobster abundance, which is just as mysteriously going to shrink in the near future, according to a team of researchers at the University of Maine and Bigelow Laboratory. Down on the ocean floor, the populations of young lobsters not yet of commercial size is already way down, the researchers say, and the decline, while evident everywhere in coastal Maine except near the New Hampshire border, is most pronounced in Penobscot Bay. The decline won't be noticed for another two to five years, but it is a warning to Maine's lobster fishery, which generates $185 million a year.
