Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on Maine's Republican U.S. senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, who voted with the majority last week in the biggest overhaul of bankruptcy law in a generation. The reforms were strongly supported by the banking industry and credit card companies. Among the bill's supporters was credit card giant MBNA, which has been the largest single campaign contributor to both Snowe ($164,000) and Collins ($66,804) during the past six years, according to the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics. Some 4,044 individuals and businesses in Maine filed for bankruptcy last year. With five weaknesses in the bill cited by the Consumer Federation of America.
