Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the numbers of legislators who are commuting to the State House daily, rather than staying in Augusta on weeknights when the Legislature is in session. Two weeks ago, only 65 legislators, roughly a third of the total 186, reported spending the night in Augusta. Legislators are allotted $70 a day for meals and lodging and/or mileage. The state will cover up to one round trip a week at 28 cents a mile. Any other travel is restricted to $38 a day, or about 138 miles.
