Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the new women's caucus in Maine's Statehouse. According to Rep. Elizabeth Watson, D-Farmingdale, about 70 of the 86 female legislators have shown interest in the group, and she has extended an invitation to male legislators as well, though it is doubtful that any will accept. Sen. Betty Lou Mitchell, R-Etna, brought the idea to Maine after attending a national conference on women's health issues. But members do not want to create a liberal women image, which some say would drive a wedge between the genders in the Legislature.
