Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the Elks building in Lewiston, which was built in 1905 and is about to be demolished by the Lewiston Sun Journal so the newspaper can build a bigger distribution center adjacent to its existing plant. The newspaper has received help from the Lewiston City Council, which has awarded the Sun Journal tax breaks worth $36,000 over 10 years, surrendered a city street and chipped in $141,000 toward demolition of at least four buildings and other costs. Some city leaders are decrying the hypocrisy of the newspaper, which has editorialized in favor of historic preservation. With a brief history of the Elks building.
