Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on a 45-acre site on the western edge of Belfast where a new housing complex called Springbrook Hill is being developed. When finished, it will have 46 units: duplexes, single-family townhouses and garden apartments. The complex will be a community of rental properties available exclusively to the employees of midcoast Maine's formidable economic mainstay, MBNA. Company-built, company-owned and company-managed housing has a century-long history throughout New England, providing housing for paper and textile mills, and large-scale manufacturing plants. With special focus on Strathglass Park, a complex of 51 duplex brick duplex houses built in 1901-02 by the Oxford Mill in Rumford and managed by its subsidiary, the Rumford Realty Company. In 1948, the homes in Strathglass Park, which are now on the National Register of Historic Places, were offered for private sale.
