Abstract

"News" piece on the legacy of the late Gov. Percival Baxter. Baxter State Park has achieved green certification for its 28,594-acre Scientific Forestry Management Area, confirming its commitment to ecologically sustainable practices. But in Gorham, a 2-acre parcel donated by Baxter to the town in 1915 is in the news because it was never used for a park as he intended, and town officials now intend to use it for a parking lot, taking it by eminent domain, if necessary.
