Abstract
An estimated 100,000 to 150,000 residents and non-residents go sports fishing in Maine, but unlike freshwater fishermen a license has never been required of saltwater fishermen. An official with the New England Coast Conservation Association believes requiring a license for saltwater fishing would give saltwater fishermen a say in managing the ocean fisheries, as well as make them bear the cost of enforcing protective law. Opponents say fishing in the ocean is an inalienable right, and a recent poll found only 20 percent of Mainers felt a license should be required. Details.
