Abstract

An ever-increasing inventory of lightweight, wireless communications and navigational devices is invading the wilderness, allowing hikers and climbers to call home from the top of Mount Katahdin or track their position in the middle of a blizzard. Fans of the new technology say it increases their enjoyment of the outdoors, while critics say it offers a false sense of security and encourages people not to learn the basic outdoor skills.
