Abstract

A study by Booz-Allen and Hamilton for the Maine Department of Transportation says the proposed Sears Island cargo port could eventually handle up to 600,000 tons of woodchips a year, considerably more than the expected 58,600 tons of container cargo and 57,900 tons of breakbulk cargo. Environmentalists are concerned about any plans to escalate the chipping of Maine's hardwoods beyond what is already used for biomass electric power plants, saying an export-scale woodchipping industry could deplete the resource within a decade.
