Abstract

"News" piece on some old families in the Kennebunk area who have owned shares of Ocean National Bank stock for generations and are fighting its takeover by Chittenden Corp., a Vermont holding company. Chittenden would pay shareholders 50 percent above selling price for the stock, would keep existing management in place, and would not have to close any branches because of overlapping territories. But those opposing the sale say their reasons are both sentimental and financial, and they fear they will lose local control of the bank over time. Ocean National has eight branches in southern Maine.
