Abstract
"News" piece on the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad (B & A), which was forced into bankruptcy last week. At least two companies are interested in buying the entire B&A system. One is a consortium headed by Railworld, the Chicago-based company that failed to line up financing in time for a negotiated purchase of the system for $62 million, and Genesee & Wyoming, the Connecticut-based company that just acquired the parent company of St. Lawrence & Atlantic, which runs trains northwest from Auburn. John Melrose, the commissioner of transportation, said he will favor the company that has the financial strength to better plan investment in Maine.
