Abstract
Les Otten started working at Sunday River when it was owned by Killington Ski Area in Vermont. Within three years he was managing the place, and in 1979 borrowed $840,000 to purchase it from Killington. In 12 years the number of skier days has increased from 40,000 to 525,000, and the resort is typically cited as being one of the best ski areas in the east. Otten, along with Heinie Merrill and Massachusetts developer Grant Wilson, now plans to build a train station/hotel/conference center complex in downtown Bethel, a proposal with both supporters and opponents among the local populace.
