Abstract

"News" piece on remote camp lots that are being sold to leaseholders in the north woods on the East and West branches of the Penobscot River and Moosehead Lake. The sales will generate hundreds of thousands of dollars for the landowners, Herb Haynes Inc. and Yankee Forest LLC, a subsidiary of Yale University, and further fragment the old industrial lands of the north woods. The lots were part of the former Great Northern Paper empire that once was 2.1 million acres. The lots sell from $8,000 to $86,500, with most in the $15,000 range. Cathy Johnson, North Woods Project director for the Natural Resources Council of Maine, said the increased parcelization of large tracts threaten what we most value: large undeveloped area with remote characteristics and diverse wildlife habitat.
