Abstract

"News" piece on Herb Haynes, one of Maine's largest woods contractors, who is among a group of landowners threatening to post their property against trespassing if fines for overweight trucks aren't reduced, according to Rep. Walter Gooley, R-Farmington. New truck weight fines are scheduled to go into effect Jan. 31, the first increase since 1975, and truckers contend the penalties are so high they'll be put out of business if they are caught with overloads. The Department of Transportation estimates overloading costs taxpayers at least $8 million a year for highway damage alone, not including bridge damage.
