Abstract
"News" piece on LD 2100, a legislative bill that would protect leaseholders in the unorganized territory. The bill has made it through the Legislature's Judiciary Committee and, if enacted, it will be an unprecedented step by the Legislature to intervene in the relationship between landowners and lessees in that region. The bill is a response to the termination of a handful of leases by some new large landowners and the general climate of uncertainty created by the turnover of historic forest tracts in the last several years. A special committee on Changes to the Traditional Uses of Maine Forests and Lands was appointed last year to study the situation. The intent of the study was to find ways to ensure fairness by requiring disclosure and certain minimum standards
