Abstract

"News" piece on a $6 million-plus research lab for the Gulf of Maine Aquarium that will break ground later this year on Portland's waterfront. U.S. senator Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, secured passage of legislation in 1996 that will allow the aquarium to acquire two contiguous parcels for the lab totaling 5.5 acres and a pier from the Coast Guard and the U.S. Naval Research Training Center. Director Don Perkins said the aquarium is already heavily invested in research and education. It employs 11 educators and Web designers who are responsible for a site that attracts 12 million visitors a year.
