Abstract
"News" piece on a draft report from the Attorney General's Office that says escalating prices for trash disposal along with rapid consolidation in the trash industry and state inaction on the development of new landfills and incinerators is putting a pinch on taxpayers. While inflation climbed 9.5 percent in the past five years, household trash collection rates jumped 27 percent, trash disposal rates jumped 16 percent, and tire disposal rates jumped 47 percent, according to a municipal survey cited in the report. The draft report is generating strong objections from Casella Waste Systems of Vermont, sixth-largest waste management firm in the U.S. with $480 million in annual revenues.
