Abstract
"News" piece on a legislative bill sponsored by state represenative Joe Brooks, D-Winterport, that would have made it illegal for anyone to knowingly cut down a tree that has an eagle's nest in it. The bill was prompted by a recent incident that occurred on Plum Creek Timber land when a harvesting plan was developed for an Essential Habitat area and a tree was taken down that hosted an eagle's nest. The state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW) took responsibility, acknowledging they knew the nest existed but neglected to notify Plum Creek. With support from IFW, lawmakers killed the proposal.
