Abstract
"News" piece on Maine's 485,000 acres of public reserved land, which have won certification from both the independent Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the industry-supported Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). In a 154-page report, FSC also detailed the problematic way the Department of Conservation's Bureau of Parks and Lands is handling key elements of its job. In response to the problems, FSC attached 13 conditions to the certification. SFI, in a 44-page report, pinpointed only three areas of "minor non-conformance" with its standards, such as erosion control and water quality protection at logging sites. With details of FSC's conditions, and a list of statistical data relating to Maine's public lands.
