Abstract

Maine voters this month defeated the Compact for Maine's Forests. Jonathan Carter of the Forest Ecology Network, one of the compact's opponents, said he would support limits on clearcuts short of an outright ban, and will work with landowners and environmentalists in getting new controls through the Maine Legislature. Mary Adams, another opponent of the compact, announced her tactical alliance with Carter was ended. Bill Vail of the Maine Forest Products Council would call a meeting of forest landowners to discuss options. Details.
