Abstract
Government scientists wanted a 59-day Maine shrimp season for 1997-98, but the Atlantic States Marine Commission approved a 105-day season. Scientists proposed an alternative to the 105-day season, calling for an overall quota of 2,000 metric tons. An estimated 275 boats fish the coast, including shrimpers from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The shrimp catch increased from 6,500 metric tons in 1994-95 to over 9,000 metric tons the following year, but dropped back to 7,000 tons last year. Scientists predict future catches based on the number of juvenile shrimp detected years earlier.
