Abstract
Kaleigh Tara, 33, last week was elected mayor of Lewiston, defeating 12-year City Council veteran Norm Poulin in a runoff election. Tara spent three years supporting two daughters on welfare checks, and eight years living below poverty levels. She works full-time coordinating a welfare-to-work program for Coastal Enterprises. State senator John Jenkins, who was barred from seeking re-election as mayor, first suggested to Tara that she try to succeed him. Poulin says residents should be wary of the apparent power shift in city politics, and sees Jenkins and City Councilor Frank Kelly as leaders of a new political establishment.
