Abstract

The state Legislature three years ago eliminated a $100,000 subsidy for the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in West Boothbay, precipitating a budget deficit that has the lab looking to affiliate itself with either the University of Maine at Orono or the University of New England in Biddeford. If the lab fails to locate an alternate source of funding, Maine stands to lose 40 jobs and $2.5 million annually in scientific grants. Details.
