Abstract

Residents of Hiram are concerned about a proposal to spread household septage in a wooded area in the town, and have voiced concern that the safety of their drinking water will be threatened by the toxic cleaners and bacteria common to most septic systems. Sixteen million gallons of untreated sludge from domestic septic systems were spread in Maine last year, and the Department of Environmental Protection says the required lime stabilization and exposure to sunlight will kill most pathogens.
