Abstract
Michael Dubois of Umbagog Trading Co. near Dixfield has established a test plot and nursery to grow ginseng, for which Maine's deciduous forests should provide an ideal habitat. Wild or woods-grown ginseng commands $300 per pound, and in 1992 the U.S. exported more than $100 million worth of both wild and cultivated ginseng. Since wild ginseng is considered endangered, its sale and export must be regulated by a state certification program, prompting the recent approval by the state Legislature of a bill calling for the establishment of a ginseng certification program.
