Abstract

Norm Kalloch, state soil scientist, is advocating the establishment of an official state soil. Nearly 100 soils have been identified in Maine, but Chesuncook is the clear choice of soil fans. Found in eight Maine counties, Chesuncook is 65 inches to bedrock, with a two-inch organic layer of leaf litter and slopes of 3 percent to 45 percent.
