    Description

    Full exterior view of Sacred Heart Church, 65 Mellen Street, from southwest (at the southeast corner of Mellen Street and Sherman Street). The building that formerly housed the Sacred Heart School (83 Sherman Street) is visible in the left portion of the photo.

    The church was built from 1896 - 1915, designed by Portland architects Francis Fassett and Edward Fassett, and is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. The first mass at Sacred Heart was celebrated on 4 April 1897.
