Description
Full exterior view of Safford House, 93 High Street, from southwest. At the time of this photograph, the building was home to Shaw Business College (beginning in 1938).
Safford House was built in 1858, designed by architect Charles A. Alexander (who also designed the Chestnut Street Methodist Church, and Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church).
In 1965, the building was purchased by the Portland Society of Art (parent organization of both the Portland Museum of Art, and Portland School of Fine and Applied Art), to be used by the school- later renamed Portland School of Art (and subsequently Maine College of Art). Portland School of Art vacated Safford House in 1983, relocating to the Baxter Building.
