Description
Full exterior view of business plaza at 511 Congress Street (former Maine Savings Bank Plaza), from southeast.
In 1972, Maine Savings Bank acquired the buildings between Mechanics Hall, and Brown Street (including the Motley Block), and the buildings were demolished in 1972 and 1973. The bank plaza was completed by December 1974, and in January 1975 Maine Savings Bank opened its corporate headquarters in the building. The bank closed in 1991.
A view of the plaza in 1982 can be seen at this link.
Atlantic Bank was the anchor tenant in the plaza, at the time of this 1997 photograph. A D'Angelo's sandwich shop location is at right, in the ground floor east storefront. Mechanics Hall (519 Congress Street) is at left.
