Description
Full exterior view of State Theatre building, 609 Congress Street, from east. Congress Street at left. High Street at right. Portland Savings Bank, State Drug store, at center. Immanuel Baptist Church, 156 High Street, at right edge of image.
The building was designed by Portland architect Herbert W. Rhodes, and constructed in 1929 with a seating capacity of 2300. The State's first feature was Gloria Swanson's first "talkie" (movie with sound), The Trespasser, opening on 8 November 1929.
