Abstract

A study by University of Southern Maine research assistant David Tremblay shows that service-sector jobs accounted for 24.5 percent of the total earnings of Mainers in 1992, up from 21.9 percent in 1988. Manufacturing, the primary wage producer in the state until 1989, declined from 22 percent of all earnings in 1988 to 20.5 percent in 1992. Total earnings grew in both the service and manufacturing sectors between 1988 and 1992, but the 7 percent annual growth rate in the service sector was more than three times the 2.2 percent annual growth rate in the manufacturing sector.
