Abstract

A look at two bills that would shorten the waiting time before an asylum seeker is authorized to work -- Rep. Chellie Pingree's Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act, and another act with the same goal, this one introduced by Senators Susan Collins and Kyrsten Sinema and co-sponsored by Sen. Angus King. Maine has a severe worker shortage and it is hoped that the bills will address this. The Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) has expressed dismay that the bills discriminate against those who do not enter the U.S. via a port of entry.
