Abstract
"City" piece on the University of Southern Maine (USM), which, in a possible violation of federal law and its own student confidentiality policy, is selling the names, addresses and telephone numbers of alumni without their consent to credit card giant MBNA for telemarketing and direct-mail advertising. In exchange, USM got a $10,000 advance and the promise of future revenue based on the number of university-logo credit cards MBNA sells. USM President Richard Pattenaude maintains there is nothing illegal about the deal, but USM Registrar John Keysor disagrees. Pattenaude has promised to review the contract and report his findings to the Student Senate by April 9.
