Abstract
"City" piece on contract negotiations between the Blethen Maine Newspapers, publishers of the Portland Press Herald, and the Portland Newspaper Guild, which aren't going well. Union members have gone without a pay raise since Nov. 30, 1997, shortly before Frank Blethen bought the Portland paper and other publications from Guy Gannett Communications. John Richardson, a union negotiator, says the Guild has twice agreed to extend its current contract to help Blethen increase the paper's profitability. The latest contract extension expires June 30, and union members say the company is now fiscally fit, and it's time to share the profits with the workforce.
