Abstract
"City" piece on Tennessee-based Prison Health Services (PHS), a private company that provides doctors, nurses and drugs for inmates. In October 2000, Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion was so dissatisfied with PHS services at the jail, he refused to renew his contract. Three months later, officials at the state Department of Corrections, which has also had problems with PHS, agreed to amend the company's contract so it could receive an extra $1.2 million. Under the revised contract, PHS will now receive a total of $14.2 million.
