Abstract
"City" piece on herbicide spraying on Portland's city sidewalks. The trade name of the liquid being used is Roundup, and its purpose is to kill the weeds that grow between the cracks in brick, asphalt and cement. About a dozen residents have formed a group called Portland Pesticide Watch (PPW) to alert the public to what they consider the health risks resulting from exposure to Roundup. PPW member Paul Drinan said the group is looking for a lawyer to assist them with an injunction to stop the spraying. PPW and the Toxics Action Center, a New England-wide group concerned about hazardous waste, have scheduled a rally in Portland's Monument Square on Aug. 22 to inform people of the spraying that's scheduled to begin again on Aug. 27.
