Abstract
"City" piece on the Cumberland County Jail and its out-of-control budget. Annual costs for maintaining the jail consume 54 percent of the county purse, up from 35 percent in 1990. Under consideration for the 2002 budget is a move to limit the number of towns in the county that receive patrol service from the sheriff's department. Peter Crichton, the county manager, has recommended cutting $600,000 from the jail's budget. Cumberland County sheriff Mark Dion said he has to carry out his duties, whether the budget is cut or not.
