Abstract
"City" piece on methadone clinics in the Greater Portland area and a new out-patient rehabilitation program for drug addicts that will be offered at Mercy Hospital's Westbrook facility beginning May 28. The Mercy program will not dispense methadone or other addictive substances. With 15 fatal overdoses of narcotics, opiates and methadone in the Portland area so far this year, revisiting the idea of cleaning up addicts without pumping more narcotics, like methadone, into their bodies seems to some in the addiction and law-enforcement fields a wise idea. With comments by Dr. Stanley Evens, medical director of Mercy Hospital's Recovery Center in Westbrook and, for two years in the mid-1990s, medical director of Discovery House in South Portland, a for-profit methadone clinic.
