Abstract

"City" piece on an incident variously described as an explosion and a blowout at the Portland International Jetport that occurred on April 15 during construction of the jetport's new parking garage when workers attempted to clear a pipe of dirt and debris by inserting a plunger into one end of the pipe and forcing it through with about 100 pounds per square inch of compressed air. The debris and the plunger shot out of the pipe, ricocheted off an excavator and traveled about 50 feet, injuring two firefighters and splattering mud on bystanders.
