Abstract

"City" piece on the ongoing fight between G'Vanni's owner Jeff Karll and Portland landlord Joe Soley. G'Vanni's, which opened in 1994, closed on July 12, and it is speculated that the restaurant's demise may have something to do with Karll's financial troubles. He is currently in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Soley is not listed as one of his creditors. But in May, Soley signed a lease for the space with New York restaurateur Matthew Kenney, who plans to reopen his Commissary restaurant there. The Commissary was formerly located in the Portland Public Market and closed April 9, due to financial difficulties.
