Abstract
Parents at a November 2 Portland School Committee meeting charged that Portland High School is recruiting athletes from surrounding towns and giving them tuition waivers. The controversy first arose during the 1993-94 school year, when four members of the PHS girls basketball team came from outside the district. A spokesman for the Southern Maine Athletic Association said the organization has been concerned about recruitment by PHS, which if proven would violate interscholastic athletic rules and the Maine Principal Association's guidelines.
