Abstract

"North by East" piece reporting that state transportation officials plan to expand passenger-rail service in Maine by establishing a commuter rail network in Portland's northern suburbs as well as a link to Augusta. Ron Roy, director of passenger-rail programs in the Maine Department of Transportation, said commuters could likely get into Portland and out again faster with rail than by driving. The commuter service, which could be operating by late 2004, would use self-propelled, seventy-passenger cars over existing tracks.
