Abstract
Article on Berwick, South Berwick and North Berwick. Situated along the banks of the Salmon Falls and Great Works rivers, the Berwicks have welcomed working families since well before 1850. Nineteenth-century author Sarah Orne Jewett made it a point to portray the lives of her Berwick neighbors as honest and proud. Many are concerned that upscale new development will overshadow the down-to-earth rural character that distinguishes the towns. The Berwicks are among Maine's fastest-growing towns - South Berwick alone has grown by 50 percent since 1980.
