Abstract

"North by East" piece with a brief profile of Margaret Chase Smith, who died May 29 at her home in Skowhegan at the age of ninety-seven. Mrs. Smith was the first woman elected in her own right to both houses of Congress. Senator Smith will be remembered by her fellow Mainers for two defining acts: her courageous and now-famous speech in 1950 opposing Senator Joseph McCarthy and, less well-known but just as telling, her decision to run for the Senate in 1948.
