Abstract

"North by East" piece on the Acid Rain Retirement Fund, founded by University of Southern Maine student Matthew McDonald in 1995. The fund buys pollution allowances but doesn't use them. Last March the fund bought 16 tons of sulfur dioxide credits--one of the pollutants that blows into Maine from the Midwest--with money raised through a concert, membership dues, and a paper drive. Currently the permits cost about $70 each.
