Abstract
"North by East" piece about 80-year-old Francis Fenton, of Mercer, who was so concerned by the fact the town had no fire department, that he went out last year and purchased two 1960s fire trucks at auction for $4,800. This August, his actions paid off when a neighbor's house caught on fire, and Fenton, with a couple of recruits, was able to contain it before the arrival of the Norridgewock Fire Department, upon which the town relies. Fenton hopes this success will convince his fellow townsmen to start their own department, and he is willing to donate his to fire engines.
