Abstract
"North by East" piece about Donna McLellan, who has been postmistress at Alna for eighteen years. When you first became postmistress, she decided to do something special for the six children of her post-office-box customers. The put up a Christmas tree in the corner of the lobby and gave each child a box. The next year she hung handmade ornaments and allowed each child to select one. Over the years, McLellan's gift giving has expended as the town's population grew. This year she expects to buy eighty-five handmade ornaments for her tots, and she will hand out dozens of loaves of banana bread to the parents.
