    Abstract

"North by East" piece on "Elsa's Bridge," between Dingley and Great islands in Harpswell. The bridge is named for Elsa Martz of Harpswell, an office manager at Bowdoin, who spearheaded an effort to replace a solid causeway with a new bridge that would allow tidal currents from the New Meadows River to wash through. The new bridge has already contributed to a reduction of the silt that choked off one of Harpswell's most valuable clam flats. Residents hope that in time, the clams will return.
