Abstract

"North by East" piece on a small pond on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta that hosts a school of big goldfish, dumped there as small fish by students. Goldfish can muddy up a pristine pond and quickly spoil it for native species. Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist Bill Woodward has tried unsuccessfully to decimate goldfish populations in certain ponds by introducing bass and says he'd prefer not to have to kill them off with rotenone. Even when he gets rid of the fish, students inevitably reintroduce them.
